It’s doubleplusungood

My mind is full of doublethink, I felt the need to post this

The mutability of the past is the central tenet of Ingsoc. Past events, it is argued, have no objective existence, but survive only in written records and in human memories. The past is whatever the records and the memories agree upon. And since the Party is in full control of all records and in equally full control of the minds of its members, it follows that the past is whatever the Party chooses to make it. ……. In Oldspeak it is called, quite frankly, ‘reality control’. In Newspeak it is called doublethink, though doublethink comprises much else as well.

1984 (chapter 9)

Here’s hoping I don’t get a cage of rat’s put on my face.

Winston the monkey

Sorry *hangs head*

Yes it’s been a while. Yes there are no new photos. Yes it has been quiet. But life has been a little crazy. I’m hoping that it will get better. That is what I have been doing instead of updating this site. Trying to make things better. So for now relax. Stop ranting and go and look at the rest of the internet. I’ll be back to bussiness as usual soon enough..

In loving memory of SX-70

It didn’t surprise me when Kodak killed their black and white line of papers earlier in the year. It’s Kodak. They are quiet happy to kill the past to make some more money. I always thought that Polaroid would be different. But I just read this. And I am quite saddened.

To be honest I knew it would be coming. It was only a matter of time really. The last ten years in photography haven’t done Polaroid any favours. But I just bought a 5×4, sure I got it because I could shoot with my canon DSLR. But I really wanted to shoot some 5×4 Polaroid.

I still have my SX-70. I haven’t shot it for about 3 years. It’s the one that uses sonar to autofocus. Always wanted to use it on a dolphin.

There is something special about a camera that makes everything look like the 1970′s. Sure it’s still made. But that isn’t the real stuff that you’ll be putting in the camera. It’s the “good enough” version. The “shrinking bottom line” version. I knew the SX-70 before the lobotomy. I’ll miss him.

2004 – the year in review

This was a long year that went really fast. Highlights include

Polymonkey v2.0.
thanks to the insane amount of work by freakdesign and a minimal amount of input from me, The Polymonkey site was given a new lease on life in May. She’s beautiful and no longer a horrible bitch to update.

Matt the monkey gets a show.
In June I had my first solo show at Gallery 482 in Brisbane. Everybody loved it. Except me. I guess no matter how much you try you still see the mistakes. And photography just doesn’t sell in this town. But if you paint, you’ve got a licence to print money.

TY2 is in shops.
The main reason why I can’t remember middle half of the year. TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2 is now in stores and out of my life. The big thing that I did was the overworld. I model worlds for a living and this was one hell of a mesh. 350,000 polys, 280 textures and 2.5 by 1.5 kilometers in size. It was huge and it hurt for the last half of the year. It was all hand modeled after I muttered the phrase.

“terrain generation always looks like arse”

Now I’m playing World of Warcraft and I am eating those words for about 4 hours a day.

Games made me travel.
Went to E3AGDC and AEAF this year. Without a doubt the highlight was E3 and the Japan stopover. The entire thing was updated live on polymonkey. You can still see the fallout in the photo section.

So you may ask, what now?

TY3 is full steam ahead.
This time I’m not building much. (I just couldn’t handle another overworld) I’m just trying to make people not break. Which is a little harder than it sounds.

Japan is calling me.
We’ve already started to save. So if the bank balance goes well. I should be there for the Tokyo Game Show. and then a week of looking around and trying to photograph the place till it can take no more.

More photos.
Well it’s photo competition city coming up. There’s four due at the end of February. So that means more polish and finially finishing of some of those lingering projects. I’m still waiting to hear back about this commission that I might be getting. And I’m putting together some stuff for a grant. And I want to get another show together. This time one that is a little more themed, rather than be a collection.

And more Polymonkey.
I got the question this year of what is this site for. Funny cause I’ve never really thought of that before. I couldn’t answer and I still can’t. Except that it’s mine. And I need to get some things out there. For the moment that’s enough….

Find a Vein

I got onto the Beta of World of Warcraft. I’ve never played a MMO before. Hell I remember when they were called MMORPG’s. Anyway I am now an online game junkie.

There is some very impressive technology in this game. Terrain generation never looked so damn pretty. I’ve never thought that displacement maps as levels were a good idea. But the way that blizzard has reinforced the world with props is very impressive.

Most Impressive

Back at work now. After three weeks off it was really hard to switch that computer on, sit down and get back to it. But I’m getting the rhythm back. And I’ve started a new shooting project, which is kicking arse at the moment. So what better way to celebrate than to update. So I’ve added a Giant Heads folder. Take a look. You can see why people in art circles used to call me the giant head guy…

Oh and for the person who wanted to see the spyro image again. You can find it in the Untilted folder in the photo section.

I’m back. Now what was I doing?

Holiday’s over, I’m back at work now. This picture has nothing to do with this at all.

Ty3 planning begins for me tomorrow. I promised to rule with an iron fist this time.

I should go and buy some gloves…..

Echo Beach… Far away in time

I’m on holiday. It’s great, I’ve been on holiday for a week and I’ve only been into work three times. Work seems to be a lot like crack. It’s really hard to get out of the habit.

Anyway I’m heading off for the next week. So I’ll have some more to post when I get back.

We’re heading for Venus

I made a new word today.

“This problem is a shit-onion”

Just as you finish fixing an issue you find a new layer to the problem. Clean up that bit and you find another. And so on. Doing this usually makes you cry.

Mommy. I want to go home

I went to the ekka yesterday. For those of you who don’t live in Brisbane the ekka is a very large week long country fair in the middle of a city. Anyway I’ll be posting some stuff up in the Bessa folder but until the film is ready this will have to do…
